Sgt. Harry Ward KIA in Mindoro

(Nov. 29, 1945) -- Sgt. Harry Ward Jr., of 70 DeWitt Avenue, Belleville, N.J., was reported killed in action in the Mindoro Islands in the Philippines on Dec. 21.

Ward was killed in action on Dec. 21, 1944, in the battle of Leyte, Sulu Sea by Kamikaze, according to the WWII Memorial, and his nephew Michael A. Hanley.

Sgt. Ward served with the 240th Engineer Construction Battalion. He took part in invasions of New Guinea, the Solomons, and Leyte. 

Ward entered the Army in January 1943, at age 18.

He was awarded the Purple Heart posthumously. He is listed as missing in action or buried at sea on the Tablets of the Missing at Manila American Cemetery, Manila, Philippines.
